This programme supports NHS organisations scope and adopt innovations that improve medicines use and safety. Innovation projects within this programme relate to medicines used to treat a particular condition, a specific cohort of patients or spanning prescribing and use of all medicines. Specific projects that have been supported include:
- Increased use of digital technology by supporting the uptake of electronic repeat dispensing
- Improving the safety of prescribing processes by implementation of PINCER, a pharmacist-led IT-based intervention, and Polypharmacy action learning sets
- Ensuring opioid medication is used safely through local and national initiatives
- Developing and embedding enhanced roles for pharmacy in respiratory medicine through the Accelerated Access Collaborative asthma biologics programme
- Optimising treatment of osteoporosis in primary care
